Puppy Food Shortage

If you are feeding your pup the food I recommend for my puppies, Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier Puppy food, you are probably having a hard time finding it in stores and online right now.

I keep a nice size stockpile of food and place orders on a regular basis so it took me a while to realize that I wasn’t getting my scheduled shipments and items were missing from my orders. Once I did I started shopping around to see if it was just my vendors and unfortunately it isn’t so I started making calls and sending emails to see what is going on.

I received an email from the President of Royal Canin and spoke with my Breeder Liason and they confirmed that what I was experiencing is in fact reality – their production is down and many items in their line are completely out of stock (including the Yorkshire Terrier Puppy food).

It seems that because of the pandemic more people have added pets to their families so the demand for pet food is up. Unfortunately, this is happening at the same time that production is down due to a shortage of workers due to the pandemic and supply chain issues. For these reasons they do not know when they will be able to start making the Yorkie puppy food again.

So now, after more than a decade of feeding, recommending, and having my pups thrive on a food, I have been searching for a replacement.

I ordered a bunch of different foods and have been trying them out over the past month.

This Is The Puppy Food I Now Recommend

Pro Plan Toy Breed Puppy Food

Here’s why

I transitioned my 8-week old litter to Pro Plan Toy Breed Puppy food over the past week and they are doing just as well now as they did when they were eating the Royal Canin. (YAY!!!)

The pieces of this food are tiny so I knew it would be great for very young and small puppies but I wasn’t sure how my 7-month-old pup would like it and I was thrilled that she loved it!!!

I am also raising two pups who came to me without any food so I didn’t have a choice but to feed them something new right away (without weaning them onto it) and they did great! I was expecting them to have upset stomachs from switching their food abruptly so I was thrilled that they did not. But since all pups are different, I still HIGHLY recommend switching your pup’s food veeeery slowly when you do it.

Although price was not a consideration for me in choosing a new food, it turns out that Pro Plan is a fraction of the cost of the Royal Canin.

As my grandmother always said “it’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it” so if you have the space to store it, I would stock up on your pup’s food in case these shortages extend to this brand too in the future.

If you have any questions or concerns please let me know.

XO,
Susan
